Situated on the front of the Old Town of Xanthi, the 1905 Boutique Hotel is not a typical hotel.
Everything goes back to the Belle Époque era
in the beginning of the 20 th century. The wall and ceiling paintings, the internal decoration of the building, the traditional narrow gobbling alleys with steps that surround it, everything is here.
The history of the building dates from the beginning of the previous century, in the late
period of the Ottoman Empire rule, during which the city experienced a flourishing economy
due to the tobacco commerce, which in turn resulted in intense construction activity. The
construction of the specific building was completed in 1905 with the aim to accommodate
the Ottoman locum tenen Chilmi Pasha and as such it functioned until 1919. 
With the Treaty of Sèvres (1920) the city and the wider region of Xanthi came under the
Greek State’s administration. In 1922 the widow of Chilmi Pasha, Chalide Chanum, daughter
of Chalil Pasha, (re-)??? sold the building to the family of the lawyer Emmanuel Karyotaki,
who arrived at the free now North Thrace to commence his professional career. Later in his
life, from 1928 to 1933, Emmanuel Karyotaki was elected a deputy in the area of Xanthi
representing the Liberal Party of Eleftherios Vanizelos. 
After the German invasion in the city, the building lodged (housed) the Bulgarian command
post. During this period its entire inner wall painting and drawing decoration was covered.
After the liberation of the country, the building functioned as a Centre for Foreigners and it
finally came again into the possession of Karyotaki family in 1954. For many years the
ground floor of the manor (mansion) functioned as a workshop (atelier) for seamstresses
Chrysoula and Chariklia Veliou. 
Emmanouel Kariotakis’s son and daughter, Menelaus and Eleni, was the next occupants of the building. In 2006 the residence came into the current owners’ possession who fully restored it. The building is characterized as a historic monumental building and a piece of art by the Greek Ministry of Culture. 
Exquisite motifs of plants and geometric shapes dominate the wall paintings
Impressive, intricate ceiling paintings adorn the rooms of the 2nd floor. A play of colours glides from room to room. All these, as a musical melody, compose the 1905 Boutique Hotel décor.
Restoration
Our vision has been the refurbishment and restoration of the listed building with respect to its history. Our aim was to offer another piece of art, not just add another hotel to the old town area, thus highlighting the cultural heritage of the place.
During the Bulgarian occupation in World War II, the building was requisitioned and used by the Bulgarian administration. All the interior decoration of the building was painted and covered. The revelation of this interior decoration with the rich frescoes and wall paintings has been strenuous.
The restoration process was done under the instructions and supervision of the Ministry of Culture and the Ephorate of Contemporary and Modern Monuments. Initially, the illustration of the wall and ceiling paintings was done by scraping the layers of paint at various nodal points to reveal the original decoration, creating the “disclosures”.
Then the “disclosures” were evaluated and replicated or restored. Finally, the restoration of the frescoes and ceilings was undertaken by Georgios Papoutsis & Elias Tzimas, the painters who also restored the Greek Parliament and the Multiplex Space of Art &Thought, the Grand Maison of Manos Hadjidakis.

Location
Xanthi is a unique base and is one of the most beautiful destinations of Thrace. The city of Xanthi was built after 1829. It was the year when great earthquakes completely destroyed the previous settlement. The current/present city was built on the ruins and round the churches that existed from the time of Byzantine Xanthia, as the city of Xanthi was called in antiquity.
The city
The city of Xanthi is surrounded by verdant hills and the river Kosinthos flows through it and into Vistonida Lake. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the “mistress of Thrace” has become famous worldwide thanks to its splendid tobacco and has enjoyed great economic and cultural development. Over the years history has not been forgotten, traditions have not been lost. The clock that dominates the Central Square, unites the Old City with the modern, as a symbol of Xanthi over the years.
The old town
The Old Town of Xanthi, situated at the foot of the Rhodope mountains, is a real gem. Built on a hill, keeping its traditional form, it captivates visitors as they walk through its winding alleys with cobbled streets looking at the traditional quaint houses and the many bars, cafes and restaurants.
It is one of the largest traditional settlements in Greece, unaffected by time and retaining its nobility. In 1976, it was declared a protected residential area. In particular, 593 important buildings have been designated as listed buildings, one of which is the 1905 Boutique Hotel.
By rail
The Railway Station of Xanthi is at the end of “Railway Station” street. There are daily rail services that are scheduled and running to Thessaloniki, Athens and Alexandroupolis. By plane
There are two local airports: Chrysoupolis in the prefecture of Kavala (about 25 km from Xanthi by motorway) and Alexandroupolis Airport (120 km from Xanthi by motorway)
Chrysoupolis Airport (25km from Xanthi)
There are regular flights with Olympic Air to and from the airport of Chrysoupolis. From the airport you can either take a TAXI directly to Xanthi or you can take a taxi to Chrysoupoli and then take the bus to Kavala and then to Xanthi (look for the relevant itineraries).
